The Success story of sunshine School in Afghanistan
Afghanistan is a country that has suffered decades of war and unrest. During these difficult times, Afghanistan lost much of its infrastructure, including its education system. After the tragic events of 9/11, the United States and international organizations stepped in to remove the Taliban from power, leading to the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. This brought new hope and a chance to rebuild the nation. Many Afghan tradesmen and investors who had moved to other countries decided to return and invest in rebuilding Afghanistan. Among them was Mr. Ghulam Rasool Nabizada, a well-known businessman who believed that education was the key to a bright future for Afghanistan. Recognizing the need for high standards and a strong curriculum, Mr. Nabizada and his family established the first high-standard private school in Kabul, combining the Ministry of Education curriculum with international standards.
IT ALL STARTED IN THE LITTLE HOUSE
Mr. Nabizada's vision came to life in a small house that was turned into a school. Starting with 16 standard classrooms and 9 offices, the building was transformed from a home into a school, designed with a computer lab, science lab, small library, and a playground for children. The school recruited experienced teachers and staff, quickly gaining popularity and a high ranking among parents. With a capacity of 250 students, the school was fully enrolled in its very first year.
A REAL SCHOOL
It quickly became clear that many parents had been waiting for a school like Sunshine. As soon as the community learned about the school, it sparked a movement with parents eager to enroll their children, resulting in a long waiting list for the next school year. Due to the overwhelming demand, Mr. Nabizada decided to move the school to a larger facility at Taimany Square in Kabul. The new campus, spread over 2 acres, featured over 80 classrooms with a capacity of 1,600 students. The school built playgrounds, including a soccer field and basketball court, for elementary and middle school students. After a successful first year, Sunshine expanded from an elementary and middle school to a high school, serving students from Tk to 12th grade.
From these humble beginnings, the school grew rapidly. After its first year, enrollment increased from 249 to 1,445 students. The school offered meals for elementary students, built a cafeteria for high school students, and provided transportation services. Sunshine High School soon became very popular in the city and received awards from the Ministry of Education and the Afghanistan Parliament. Sunshine High School graduated its first class in 2008, with 95% of students securing full scholarships to top government universities.
Sunshine Tk-12 School has enrolled over 10,000 students in its 18 years of activity, graduating many who have gone on to higher education and become valuable contributors to their communities.
THE COMMITMENT OF A COMMUNITY
Sunshine was founded by pioneering parents with a vision to provide their children with an education of international standards in a supportive environment. From the start, the school attracted a strong and committed community, forming strong bonds with parents who supported the school's mission.
EXPANDING TO HIGHER EDUCATION
Building on the success of Sunshine High School, Mr. Nabizada, his son Mohammad Sami Nabizada, and their family founded Sunshine College in 2008. The college offered diplomas and two-year degrees in fields such as Computer Science, Business Administration, Networking Administration, and Law & Political Science. Sunshine College quickly became highly regarded and popular in the community.
In 2010, they established Sunshine University, offering bachelor's degrees in fields like Computer Science, Economics, Business Administration, and Law & Political Science. With three campuses in Kabul, Sunshine University enrolled over 20,000 students in its 14 years and graduated 10,000 students. The university hired experienced professors and had a strong management team, helping graduates secure important jobs in both government and private sectors.
